This is the Sea III

Occasionally I need a down weekend to recharge the batteries, and as I had received my copy of This is the Sea III, this was just the excuse to lounge on the couch and watch others paddle.

Justin has done another outstanding job of capturing both the action and romance of sea kayaking. She strikes a nice balance between the intense and the sublime. I can’t imagine anyone watching the segment on the Scottish Races with all the big names in the BCU doing some amazing boat handling, and not wanting to grab a paddle and heading to their own local race, albeit maybe a slightly smaller one.

Especially poignant is the segment on Andrew McAuley’s trip down the Antarctica peninsula with his mates in 2006. It shows both the beauty and danger of Antarctica and Andrews’s sense of wonderment at it all. Having a family of my own, the bitter irony of some of his observations and remarks was particular hard to watch at times, but it certainly doesn’t take away from this remarkable paddle.

TITS III follows the fine tradition set by the previous films and I’d highly recommend it as an addition to any sea-kayakers library for those days when a fire, couch, and TV seem the better option.
